Board Certification Model presented to state leaders
January 24, 2009In a presentation that included two hours of questions and answers, more than 150 state optometric association and affiliated organization leaders heard representatives of the Joint Board Certification Project Team explain how board certification in optometry could be implemented. The project team includes representatives of the American Academy of Optometry, the AOA, the Association of Regulatory Boards in Optometry, the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry, the American Optometric Student Association and the National Board of Examiners in Optometry.
I have read your resolutions and wishes in my new AOA News. Regarding Board Certification: you asked me before, and I’m really trying to keep an open mind and to wait until I know what I should know before deciding my opinion. I really am.
Having said that,I have questions. If I am still unconvinced that this is a good idea, how much time must I wait to avoid having my displeasure called “premature”?
It appears there may be a vote at the AOA meeting this summer. It also appears that ARBO may decide, or NBEO, or any and all combinations of entities involved in this draft model could vote on this as well. How much input does an average practitioner have on these organizations?
I am hungry for more details on the changing health care environment. Today’s issue of the News just whetted my appetite.
